About
Silver Blades - Pre-CanSkate Program
Pre-CanSkate is designed for young first-time skaters (typically ages 4–6) who are new to the ice or who need support with balance and confidence. This program teaches the essential skills needed to move safely and comfortably on the ice before progressing into the full CanSkate program.
Skaters learn eight foundational skills such as standing up independently, marching forward, balancing, and stopping. Lessons are delivered by certified Skate Canada coaches, using fun circuits, colour-coded groups, and engaging activities to build confidence. Once skaters can move around the ice safely, they begin rotating through the three FUNdamental areas of skating: Balance, Agility, and Control.
Helmets are mandatory for all Pre-CanSkate skaters. A CSA-approved hockey helmet is required (other helmet types are not permitted). Caregivers must remain in the arena for all children under 12.
What to Bring:
CSA-approved hockey helmet
Mittens or gloves
Sharpened skates (hockey or figure skates)
Warm, layered, water-resistant clothing
Families should arrive about 15 minutes early to get skaters ready and pick up name labels. Expect some bingo-dabber markings on clothing—these wash out easily.
Pre-CanSkate provides a fun, foundational introduction to skating that prepares children for success in the CanSkate levels.
